Previous Bishops

Previous Bishops within Paisley Diocese

Rt. Rev. James Black was the first Bishop of Paisley from April 1948 until his death on 29th March 1968.

 

Rt. Rev Stephen McGill, our second Bishop, was translated from Argyll & the Isles on 25th July 1968. He retired on 30th March 1988. He died on 10th November 2005, just ten dates short of the Ordination of the Bishop Philip Tartaglia.

 

Bishop John Mone was translated from Glasgow, where he had been an Auxiliary Bishop on 8th March 1988. He took over pastoral care of the Diocese at the Mass of Chrism that year. He retired on 7th October 2004.

 

Archbishop Mario Conti was appointed by Pope John Paul II as Apostolic Administrator on 7th October 2004. He acted in this capacity until the Ordination of Bishop Tartaglia on 20th November 2005.
